Beginning With Black & White An Artist Talk

In 1965, the public voices of both Malcolm X and J.D. Salinger went silent only 119 days apart but by drastically different means. Where one voice was silenced involuntarily, the other willingly retreated from public life – i.e. Malcolm X was assassinated on February 21 at the Audubon Ballroon in Harlem while J.D. Salinger published his last work, ?Hapworth 16, 1924,? on June 19 in The New Yorker, subsequently retiring to his home in Cornish, New Hampshire. An interest in the coincidences and differences between these two figures regarding voice has inspired a new project by Dan Starling, who investigates this relationship through a variety of media including a book work, photography, and video. For this colourschool session, Dan Starling will discuss recent projects including the Alliance for French & American Relations, photo-collage works, and his new project involving Malcolm X and JD Salinger.
