But What Colour Is the Bicycle?
From Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel (1913) to Picasso’s Bull’s Head (1943) and Joseph Beuys’ _Is it about a bicycle? _(1984), the bicycle has often been a subject in the work of many artists. In this colourschool series, we will examine the frequency and significance of the bicycle in art. In particular, this series addresses how colour and the form of the bicycle registers a critical commentary on contemporary life. Through screenings, seminars, and research, but what colour is the bicycle? will build a comprehensive archive on the topic as a part of the larger colourschool project.
Session two presents a screening of Cyclo (1995) by Anh Hung Tran followed by a discussion situating the film in relation to de Sica’s The Bicycle Thief and contemporary artworks that figure the bicycle in some way.
