Current & Past Events

colourschool Study Group

For this session, independent curator Michael Birchall conducts a discursive review of colourschool’s activities over the past two years through an examination of its projects, programs, and relationships to current and historical art practices. Situating colourschool within the context of Vancouver and beyond, this session locates the project among various trajectories and movements including, but not limited to Fluxus, The Western Front, Artist Run Centres and Cultures, Institutional Critique, Performance Art, Radical Pedagogy, Relational Aesthetics, Participatory Practices, and Open Space Technology. Proceedings from this session will develop into a printed project for C Magazine.

Host Biographies

Michael Birchall is an emerging curator and writer from England, currently based in Vancouver, where he has been Curatorial Resident at The Western Front since January 2008. He holds a Masters degree in Curatorial Studies and is co-founder of Attention Deficit, a collaborative curatorial group. Recently, he published an essay in the book Drawing Life on the year-long project of New York based artist Viktor Timofeev.

Michael’s current curatorial interests include collaborative and participatory-based practices. He is in the process of working on a postcard exhibition for Cornershop Projects, an open framework for projects engaging with economic exchange, which will present some of his favorite artists in Vancouver at the moment.
